Kid Rock: Don’t Just Steal Music, Steal Everything

Kid Rock announced that he’s boycotting iTunes because he says between Apple and the labels, they’re keeping all the money.
In recent comments, Kid Rock - real name Robert Ritchie - has said that his record company had previously asked him to stand against “illegal downloading” because he was told that people were stealing from him. According to a BBC report, his response to the label was: “Wait a second, you’ve been stealing from the artists for years. Now you want me to stand up for you?’
In true rock and roll style, this performer wasn’t going to do as he was told. “I was telling kids - download it illegally, I don’t care,” he said. “I want you to hear my music so I can play live.”
Now, in 2008, Kid Rock is boycotting iTunes because he says that artists are not getting their fair share of the revenue generated by the Apple store. He is annoyed at this ‘old system’ “where iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don’t give it to the artists”.
Kid Rock crucially talks about how the Internet should’ve been a “great opportunity for everyone to be treated fairly, for the consumer to get a fair price, for the artist to be paid fairly, for the record companies to make some money.”
Of course, as the singer notes, it hasn’t turned out that way but concedes that he’ll probably have to put his music on iTunes at some point but notes that he’s doing ok overall without it: “I’ve just sold a million records, I’m not really feeling that blow” he said.
With his tongue firmly in his cheek, Kid Rock also says he doesn’t agree with the one-sided argument against file-sharing: “I think we should level the playing field. I don’t mind people stealing my music, that’s fine. But I think they should steal everything. You know how much money the oil companies have? If you need some gas, just go fill your tank off and drive off, they’re not going to miss it.”
Will this rocker be taking his own advice? Probably not. “No, I don’t steal things. I’m rich” he said.

I never really liked Kid Rock, but I have to give him credit for standing up against the record companies and itunes. The artists have always been screwed when it comes to getting paid from record sales. They make all their money from live shows, so why should they care about someone sharing their music.

I’ve been stealing gas for years now, isn’t that what my local government representitive with his head up his @$$’s SUV is for? A few gas cans, a tube, and some breath mints go a long way, and he just thinks his SUV is getting shitty MPG. ^_^

Cool! Never really liked him all that much before, but if he comes out with something and promotes it the way NiN did i think i’ll support him, and i think a lot of you will too.
itunes screws artists with roughly a 30% take, then the labels get their take of the 70cents, which gives the artists what… 15 cents? so if they sold a million copies via itunes they get 150k on the other hand if they left the label and offered their album for 4-5 bucks like NiN.. they would be making sooooo much more money, no matter if they are already rich or not, the tides turning and while the labels are slowly getting washed out we are riding the crest!

OK you might not like Kid Rocks music, i don’t. He’s still made a point and stood against the system and for the pirates, stop complaining just because he’s not your favorite artist.
Just like when you complain about artists that release their music for free on BT sites. Ok so they’re not multi-platinum selling artists but then when one does come forward and support the pirates, what do you do? Complain it’s not the right multi-platinum artist.
We should be thankful for all the support we get from the artists be it public statements or free/donation downloads,After all they make the music. We might not like it but someone else probably does. It’s art and we should support the artists that are supporting us.
Yeah, I really don’t like his music, but I have an utmost respect for him just because of this.
Plus, I like the gas and dash idea…..

The record labels have been ripping off artists since the beginning of time. It’s nice to see and artist stand up and say that I’m not helping you, unlike those morons from Metallica.
Good ideas, just incredibly out of touch. If it were the oil companies themselves affected by you nicking gas, fair enough, but it’s the petrol stations themselves that’ll be loosing the money. Which makes it more like nicking a CD from a shop rather than just downloading some songs.

This is Metallica backtracking on their original stance about file sharing once they realized they could make more money with uploading their music.
In 2000, the group (Metallica) was behind the lawsuit that killed Napster and became one of the loudest critics of file sharing. The band has had a change of heart, apprently, after seeing the huge wads of cash Radiohead and, err, Cliff Richard, made out of sticking albums online.
Way to stand firm on your beliefs Metallica (industry whores).
Finally someone says it as it is. Apple is sooo money hungry. Everyone falls at their feet and no one wants to call them as the corrupt bumbs they are.
So if I drove away from a petrol station it would put a dent in the station’s pocket instead of the oil company’s? No one should care either way.
