The Venice Project, the much-awaited Internet TV project from the founders of Skype, started bringing in outside beta testers today. The beta program will be viral, with each user able to distribute invites to new testers. As soon as we give it a spin we’ll do some more in depth coverage here and on NewTeeVee.
Writes Janus Friis on his blog,
We set out to try to merge the best of TV and the best of the Internet and I think we have just taken a big step on a long journey. For a few months we have been quietly testing with a small circle of people. Now, we’re going to expand that circle – with more and more people getting invited. If you want to take it for a spin, get an invitation from an existing beta tester.
From Om: Someone who got to use the service wasn’t very kind. “To sum up, very bad interface, no text description of what the buttons mean, quality of video goes up and down very much, not really much better than a good flash file that you size up 250%.”

I was told by my contact to remember that this is pretty a pretty young version of the client and not to be too harsh …
And make sure you log any bugs

This person must not know the meaning of Beta Test

They still haven’t got a good skype video yet either. Why doesn’t EBay buy SightSpeed for a tenth of what they paid for Skype and get some good video technology???
3:18 PM PT
The interfaces in the screenshots remind me of Swarm and Stack from labs.digg.com, for some reason…
Either way, Friis knows how to make viral, hugely successful projects, so Im gonna bet that in a few months, after all the bugs are ironed out, this thing will be big.

I think that posting your email address in the clear on a high-traffic web page is probably an automatic disqualification for most beta programs.
Enjoy the spam. :)

But then again, signing up for beta from the guys behind KaZaa and Skype might be an invitation for a lot more than spam. Spyware anyone?

hey if you read gigaom you should know beta…this is a B E T A. My God.

I have seen the software and know people working on the project…it is stunning and 3-4 years ahead of the competition. hang tight people…patience.

This is exactly what I’ve been wanting to see, TV on the Internet. Now there’s going to be an interesting fight for TV: can it create compelling enough material to entice dedicated Internet users to tune in over all their other choices. Measurement to date has always had an unclear result because users had to switch between devices and venues and make that comparison, this changes how we measure.
I’m available as a tester if anyone wants to send an invite.
5:35 PM PT
Well, either the image quality on the thing is really bad, or you should use another program (or settings) for resizing pictures.
Oh, just looked it up: you don’t resize them, but change their width in the HTML. That’s kind-of not-done: the pictures themselves aren’t bad.
9:11 PM PT
Nice to see some different screenshots of the UI in TVP. For a beta, it’s already looking polished. Looking forward to “kicking the tires”.
12:09 AM PT
If you want anything like that to work in India you might wanna put up more stories like “How to Improve Broadband Speeds In India” or “Why does Tata Indicom or MTNL or Sify or Whatever Suck Big Time?”
Internet is still in its nascent stage. In India, it’s just conceived. We got to traverse through the whole 9 months’ story, read 9 New York years, and right now we are just beginning to puke. Wifi is not even HiFi here, its Martian.
3:44 AM PT
I am a beta-testeur (but I have no invitation any more, sorry guys) and I do not agree with the other one beta-testeur.
There are still bugs (”beta-test”) but I test it since a month and they make very frequently improvements.
The quality of the video is very good, the interface is a little bit complicated (but button descriptions are given now) but the client in itself is very very pleasant. I’m convinced this application will be a killer.
Last remark, don’t forget 2 things :
- it is a beta-test (the first public one actually, until now we were only up to ~200 testers in th world)
- it is P2P, so the critical mass is very important : the more users, the more quality…
And for those who understand french : here is a first description of the venice project.

I got my account this morning and was really impressed. This is the first beta of some exciting new technology. Video quality is pretty good. Some of the older clips do need to be reencoded with the new version of the encoding process.
Also being Peer to Peer based the quality will improve as the numbe rof users increases.
Also the datacentre is in europe so users elsewhere in the world probably suffer a bit.
I found the user interface easy to use and pretty polished for such an early beta.
In 2 years this thing will be embeded into STB and xboxs and who knows what else and it will be the way TV was ment to be.
I am one happy user and look forward to even more content being added.
Colin

They’re missing the point. The UI is rough, but you can get a feel for the intended experience and it’s good. I didn’t realize how much fast channel switching and programmed (the media kind of programming) channels changes the experience.
There’s lots of complain about, limited programming, jerky video from time to time, limited features. I’m not sure any of that matters. The initial tradeoffs appear sensible from a product development perspective. They’re riding all the right trends technical and otherwise. They say it’s p2p, but i’ll bet they’re running some honkin’ supernodes…

I’m a beta tester on TVP.
I’d disagree that the interface is unintuitive. It’s designed like a set-top box or a DVD menu, rather than a Windows app. There are rough edges, but it’s self-consistent.
Given the current size of the beta program, I expect most of the video would be streamed from TVP’s own boxes. So outside of Europe the connections would be slower. In the UK, it works fine: roughly VCR quality, a glitch every 15 mins or so.
They do need to sort out the content situation though. It’s pretty much what you’d see on MTV/Discovery channel. If I had satellite TV, I’d see no reason to use it. As a tech platform they should (and can) cater to everyone.
(And there are better ad rates for niche content!)

I was fortunate enough to receive a beta invite yesterday and was quite impressed with the software. I thought the video quality was pretty good, at a higher resolution than most flash video I’ve seen recently. And I liked the interface.
Like others have said, it’s all about content, however. I think much of their success will be dependent on how much quality content they can license. If they just end up with what you can find on YouTube, I don’t think they’ll succeed (even though their P2P infrastructure should give them much lower operating costs).
The other aspect of their success is whether they’ll be able to get their software embedded in set-top boxes and into living rooms, although this is less important. I used to think that no one would watch significant amounts of video programming sitting in front of a computer, but now I’m not so sure.
It’s interesting that even during this limited beta, they have advertising in the system already. Probably a smart move, making sure user expectations are set early.

I understand this is streaming P2P television, like Sopcast (is it still around?).
I wonder if Venice also supports downloadable TV, where there seems to be less of a trade off between quality and critical mass. Look for instance at solutions like Democracy (http://www.getdemocracy.com) and FireAnt (http://getfireant.com/).

At this point I think it’s only fair to cut venice some slack based on it’s potential to not only change and expand on what’s available on a creative level, but on a business level as well. Independent studios and smaller entertainment companies with quality stuff will be given a greater opportunity that otherwise may not have been available. Hopefully Venice can be an alternative to the same formula driven content most of us have been subject to for the last few years. I’ve yet to try it out myself, but if anyone knows of any invites lying around i’d appreciate it!

I am not sure if it was because I already signed up to be a Beta tester, or because of my plead on this site, in any case it worked. I have been testing it for days now. I am in Hollywood and more than a little interested in starting a new IPTV broadcast quality channel, I have industry folks in Scotland, Australia, Seatle and here in tinsel town that may join me. Content is king (no new news there), everyone worldwide are very protective of the content they have and keeping all archives secure. It will take dreamers to come up with innovative, edgy and experimental material. It will be the great equalizer if the picture quality ends up high definition (or at least enhanced definition), and connected to your TV. Who will watch full length “postage stamp” poor quality pictures on a computer screen? That said, YouTube has it’s merits and there is enough room for all levels of IPTV. Some sites may be lawsuits waiting to happen by those using other peoples content without rights, but who is to say who watches what and when?, not me not you. It is the wild west out there, and I for one would like to be one of the first space cowboys. Things that make you go hmmmm…stay tuned. Thank you TVP guys for giving us all something to ponder.
Chris Cavanagh, Los Angeles.

So, imagine all of this but with both a PC client and a set top box offering dvd quality to your television. Ability to browse the web on your TV via the set top box and go back up to 7 days in the program guide (on any channel)and launch a show you may have missed. Ok, there is more, also a full nPVR. Live linear channels from major US broadcasters, VoD, subscription VoD. All 100% legal under content distribution agreements with the rights holders… Tv on the PC is good (we offer it as well) but TV belongs on the, well, TV. We will be in full beta late January, come see us if you want a service that looks and feels like digital cable or satellite, but with more interactivity and better picture quality.

…yes, yes im one more of those who is pursuing the online tv development, and help to make and convience people that our comp. its a powerfull flexible tool and so can be a mass entretainer, gentle fun center too.
im a really good and impartial critic for those kinda programs
i already try/use some of them like utv, tvants, sopcast, satellite tv for pc and of course online spotlight on windows mce; and the “venice proyect” sounds really attractive and looks like its have an easy, secure interface, till now i only found that on mce; but now im wondering how this new p2p (like utv or tvants) can offer to us and how can this impact to our connection speed and information overflow using this great but i kinda think heavi(flash looks like)interface, im dying know so if you have an invitation and u can send it to me i will be very gratefull. gogotshi@hotmail.com

I’m just finishing out a theater room and setup in my home, I would really like to test this out - - for the long haul, not just a quick peek!
This is the future, folks…
If someone would be so kind to provide an invitation, I would be thrilled to test.

Could someone send me an invitation to be a beta tester. I’ve used Slingbox and Sqeezebox for a couple of years now. Even used my PocketPC to watch HBO from my cable box while I was vacationing in Turkey. This sounds like a KISS project, that’s what people like. Having a dozen remotes each with dozens of buttons becomes mind numbing. I know of many people who just can’t cope. I’d like to be a part of the beta so I can contribute my opinions on it’s user friendliness…..Thanks
